Gifted and Talented Referral Window January 22- Febuary 8
Posted 01/09/2019 09:42AM

MISD strives to provide challenging and appropriate instruction to all students in the district.  For this reason, the district screens all 2nd grade students with a cognitive assessment to determine if a Gifted and Talented learning need is present.  However, students may be eligible to take the test in other grades as well with at teacher or parent referral.

If you are considering a referral for your child, please look at the table provided on the link below comparing a "bright student" versus a "gifted student."  If your child demonstrates 10 or more characteristics in the "gifted student" column, your child may show the potential for benefiting from the GT program.  (Please note, the assessment is approximately 2 hours long and is computer-based.  Your child will be responsible for any work missed during the assessment session.)

Finally, please know that referring you child for GT testing is a process that happens over the course of several weeks.  After the initial referral, your child will take a 3 part cognitive abilities assessment.  Secondly, you and your child's teacher will complete a survey focused on the observed academic behaviors that your child demonstrates in and out of class, and finally our campus GT review committee will meet together to look at all data to determine if placement in the Gt program is appropriate.

Bright Student vs Gifted Student

The GT parent referral window is from January 22 - February 8, 2019.  If you would like to refer your child, please email your GT Specialist for more information.
